If the length, width and height of your suitcase add up to more than 160 cm, you need a free advance reservation for a seat with an oversized baggage area on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen. The reservation costs nothing extra — you pay the normal reserved-seat price — but boarding without one means a baggage fee of 1,000 yen including tax, as of September 2026. Bags totalling more than 250 cm cannot be brought on board at all.

Most travellers never hit this rule, because a normal check-in suitcase sits under the line. The people who get caught are the ones with a large hard case, a second oversized bag bought mid-trip, or sports gear they assumed was fine. Here is how to work out which group you are in before you reach the platform.

Do you need a reservation for your suitcase on the Shinkansen?

Measure your bag’s length, width and height and add the three numbers together. That single figure — JR calls it the total of the three dimensions — decides everything.

Total of three dimensions What you need to do
Up to 160 cm Nothing. Use the overhead rack or the space at your feet. No reservation, no fee.
Over 160 cm up to 250 cm Reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area or an oversized baggage compartment in advance. Same price as a normal reserved seat.
Over 250 cm Not permitted on board. Forward it or ship it instead.

Two further caps apply to every bag regardless of the total: no single dimension may exceed 2 metres, and the weight must be 30 kg or less. JR Central also states you may carry two such pieces free of charge, with items like umbrellas, canes and handbags not counting towards that limit.

One wording difference is worth knowing. JR Central’s oversized baggage page describes the reservation band as a total of 161 to 250 cm, while the smartEX booking guide describes it as 160 cm or more and 250 cm or less. If your bag measures right on 160 cm, the safe reading is to reserve.

Which suitcase sizes need a reservation?

Because the rule is stated as a simple sum, you can settle your own case with arithmetic. The examples below are worked sums, not manufacturer specifications — measure your actual bag, including wheels and the handle housing, since JR’s pages set the limit on the bag’s length, width and height without carving those out.

If your bag measures Total Verdict
55 × 40 × 25 cm (airline cabin size) 120 cm Fine — no reservation
65 × 45 × 27 cm (medium check-in) 137 cm Fine — no reservation
70 × 48 × 30 cm (large check-in) 148 cm Fine, but getting close
75 × 52 × 33 cm (extra-large case) 160 cm On the line — reserve
80 × 55 × 35 cm (expanded or oversized case) 170 cm Reservation required
90 × 60 × 40 cm (trunk-style case) 190 cm Reservation required
110 × 80 × 65 cm 255 cm Over the limit — forward it instead

The practical takeaway: a single suitcase you checked onto a flight is very unlikely to need a reservation. A bag that needed an oversize-baggage tag at the airport probably does.

What happens if you board without a reservation?

You are charged a baggage fee of 1,000 yen including tax, as of September 2026, and staff may direct you to move the bag. The fee is not a booking charge you can pay in advance to skip the reservation — it is what you pay for not having reserved, which is why it is cheaper in every sense to add the reservation when you buy the ticket.

There is one place where 1,000 yen is a legitimate advance purchase rather than a penalty. JR West sells a one-way Unlimited Ride Oversized Baggage Ticket for passengers whose unlimited-ride product only covers non-reserved seating on the Sanyo Shinkansen between Shin-Osaka and Hakata. It costs 1,000 yen for adults and 500 yen for children as of September 2026, and it lets those passengers reserve a seat with an oversized baggage area. You buy it at JR-West ticket offices in major stations or at major travel agencies in the JR-West area, up to the day of use.

Which Shinkansen lines have the oversized baggage rule?

JR Central’s page places the service on the Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen — the Tokyo to Shin-Osaka to Hakata to Kagoshima-Chuo corridor, covering Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama services. That is the run most visitors take for Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Hiroshima and Fukuoka.

Note that the pages also state only some reserved cars offer the facility, and the rule attaches to reserved seating. Other Shinkansen lines are operated by different JR companies with their own luggage guidance, so if you are heading north or to the Hokuriku region, check that operator’s own luggage page before you travel rather than assuming this rule applies or does not.

Oversized baggage area or oversized baggage compartment?

These are two different things and the booking screens name them separately.

An oversized baggage area is the floor space behind the last row of seats in a car. Booking the last-row seat gives you the right to use it, and JR Central notes the space is shared among the five passengers holding those back-row reserved seats. smartEX reflects the same constraint at booking: up to five people per reservation in an ordinary car and up to four in a Green car, and you cannot split an oversized baggage reservation across different car numbers.

An oversized baggage compartment is a lockable cupboard on the deck near the reserved cars, offered as a trial service. JR Central gives the compartment size for its premium-class compartments as less than 80 × 60 × 40 cm, so a bag can be under the 250 cm boarding limit and still be too bulky for a compartment. If your case is genuinely large, the area behind the seats is the option that fits it.

How do you add the reservation on smartEX?

The reservation is part of the seat booking, not a separate add-on you buy later. In smartEX the sequence is: choose Search Train, enter your date, time, stations and passenger count, then pick Seat with Oversized Baggage Area from the seat type options, select your train, choose the fare and facility, view the seat map and confirm.

You do not have to book online. JR Central lists three other routes: tell the staff at a JR ticket office that you want a seat with an oversized baggage area, choose that seat type on a reserved-seat vending machine, or book through the JR-WEST, JR-KYUSHU or Japan Rail Pass reservation services. In all cases the ticket is the same price as an ordinary reserved seat.

Do this early if you are travelling in a peak week. The number of back-row seats per train is small, and once they are gone on your preferred departure, your choices are a different train or a different plan for the bag.

What is exempt from the reservation rule?

Strollers, sporting goods and musical instruments are treated differently: they do not trigger the reservation requirement, and they may use baggage racks, baggage compartments or oversized luggage spaces. You can still choose to reserve a baggage-area seat for them if you would rather have the floor space.

Electric four-wheeled wheelchairs are also addressed, with JR Central describing an allowance around 120 cm in length and height and around 70 cm in breadth. Separately, some items are banned from trains entirely — hazardous materials, sharp objects that are not properly packed, stoves, animals outside small charged cases, and anything unclean or strongly odorous.

When is forwarding your suitcase the better move?

If your bag is over 250 cm total, forwarding is not an option, it is the only option. It is also often the easier choice for a bag in the 160 to 250 cm band, because it removes the reservation, the back-row seat constraint and the job of moving a heavy case through a crowded station.

Yamato Transport’s TA-Q-BIN parcel service handles parcels from Size 60 to Size 200, meaning a linear dimension of up to 200 cm and a maximum weight of 30 kg, with a maximum single side of 170 cm. Read that 200 cm figure carefully: it is stricter than the Shinkansen’s 250 cm boarding limit, so a bag can be legal on the train yet too large for standard TA-Q-BIN.

The same page also states the standard service is not available for suitcases and travel bags that are Size 160 or larger, alongside its golf, ski and snowboard services. For travel luggage specifically, Yamato runs Hands-Free Travel counters — baggage storage and same-day delivery between airports, stations and hotels, carrying a logo for counters certified by the Japan Tourism Agency. Fees and cut-off times vary by counter, so confirm the price and the size limit for your bag at the counter or with Yamato directly rather than assuming a figure.

Planned well, forwarding means you ride the Shinkansen with a day bag and your case meets you at the next hotel. Planned badly, it means arriving before your luggage does, so check the counter’s cut-off time for same-day delivery.

Frequently asked questions

Does the oversized baggage reservation cost extra?
No. JR Central states the ticket is the same price as a reserved seat. The 1,000 yen including tax, as of September 2026, applies when you bring oversized baggage without having reserved.

Can I just pay the 1,000 yen and skip the reservation?
That is not how the fee is framed on the official pages — it is charged for travelling with oversized baggage without a reservation, and staff may ask you to move the bag. The one case where 1,000 yen is a proper advance purchase, at that price as of September 2026, is JR West’s Unlimited Ride Oversized Baggage Ticket for non-reserved-seat pass holders on the Sanyo Shinkansen.

How many bags can I bring on the Shinkansen?
Two pieces per person, each within 250 cm total, 2 metres in any single dimension and 30 kg. Umbrellas, canes and handbags are not counted towards the two.

Do I need to reserve for a golf bag, skis or a cello?
No. Sporting goods and musical instruments, along with strollers, are outside the reservation requirement and may use the racks, compartments or oversized luggage spaces.

What if I buy a large suitcase in Japan mid-trip?
Measure it before your next Shinkansen leg. If the three dimensions total more than 160 cm, change your seat to one with an oversized baggage area, or forward the bag to your next hotel and keep your existing seat.
