You're on the second floor of Don Quijote at 10pm, there's a wall of skincare in front of you, nothing is in English, and the basket in your hand is already heavy. What's actually worth carrying home?
Five categories: hyaluronic lotion, foaming cleanser, tone-up sunscreen, rice sheet masks, and a big box of daily sheet masks. Those are the ones where the gap between the Japanese price and the price at home is big enough to spend suitcase space on.
Everything else — electronics, branded bags, Kit Kats you'll find at the airport — is noise. And if you're shopping in November or later, the tax refund now happens at the airport rather than at the till, which changes how you pack.
🛍 Three things worth knowing before you walk in
Nobody can tell you Donki's shelf price in advance. The company's own majica page for its monthly deals says plainly that prices on featured items may differ by store. So plan around products, not numbers.
What you can pin down is the maker's own price. Every Japanese brand below sells direct, and those official prices are the honest yardstick — Donki usually sits at or under them, and sometimes well under.
The other thing: the skincare floor is the one place Donki is genuinely organised. A shopper writing up a MEGA Don Quijote Shibuya haul called the rest of the seven floors "analysis paralysis" with "173636 things on sale." Go up to cosmetics, fill the basket, leave.
💸 The five-item basket, with what it costs at home
All prices below are tax included and as of 2026-10, taken from the maker's own shop (Japan) and from overseas sellers' own listings (home).
| What | Size | Maker's price in Japan | Getting it at home |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Lotion | 170 mL | ¥902 (Rohto's own shop) | US$25.99 for the same 170 mL bottle at Target |
| Senka Perfect Whip fA | 120 g | ¥548 (Fine Today's own shop) | ¥1,377 on YesStyle, marked down from ¥1,720 |
| Skin Aqua Tone Up UV Essence, SPF50+ PA++++ | 70 g | ¥1,210 (Rohto's own shop) | ¥2,155 on YesStyle, down from ¥2,395 |
| Keana Nadeshiko Rice Mask | 10 sheets | ¥715 (Ishizawa Labs) | ¥1,700 on YesStyle, down from ¥2,125 |
| LuLuLun Precious RED | 32 sheets | ¥2,090 (LuLuLun's own shop) | The 32-sheet boxes barely export — both overseas listings I checked were out of stock or discontinued |
¥902 against US$25.99. You don't need a currency app to see that one.
Hada Labo Gokujyun lotion is the single best-value thing on the floor. It's a watery toner with four kinds of hyaluronic acid, no fragrance, no alcohol, no parabens, and Rohto says you can use it on face, body and hair. Buy two. Buy the 400 mL pump if you're not flying hand-luggage only.
Senka Perfect Whip is a ¥548 cleanser that outperforms things costing five times more. Fine Today lists seven versions — the plain fA at ¥548 is the one to get. The acne-care and collagen ones are ¥658; Premium Clear is ¥770. Honestly, the differences are small enough that I'd grab the cheapest and spend the saving on masks.
Skin Aqua Tone Up UV Essence is sunscreen that also evens out your skin tone, which is why it sells out. The pink, white and mint-green 70 g tubes are ¥1,210 each. Mint green cancels redness; lavender is the all-rounder. At ¥1,210 versus ¥2,155 shipped, buy one per person you're shopping for.
Keana Nadeshiko rice masks come 10 to a pack for ¥715 — about ¥72 a sheet. Thick Japanese-made sheets soaked in rice ferment, rice bran oil and rice ceramides. These are the ones people come back for.
LuLuLun boxes are the suitcase decision. Precious RED is ¥2,090 for 32 sheets — roughly ¥65 a sheet — while the 7-sheet travel pack is ¥638, or about ¥91 a sheet. The entry-level Pure Everys box is ¥1,760 for 32. One box is flat, light and lasts a month; this is the one item where the big pack genuinely beats the small one.
🏬 Donki vs Matsumoto Kiyoshi vs @cosme
Three different jobs. Pick by what you need, not by what's closest.
| Don Quijote | Matsumoto Kiyoshi | @cosme TOKYO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best for | One late-night sweep: skincare, snacks, souvenirs | Everyday drugstore basics, found on almost any high street | Trying things on, newer and mid-range brands |
| Price | Varies by store — the company says so itself | Standard drugstore pricing, frequent own-brand deals | Full retail; it's a showroom, not a discounter |
| Range | Broadest, but skincare is only a few floors | Deep on medicines and basics | ~Three floors of cosmetics, Harajuku, 11:00–21:00 |
| Tax-free | Cosmetics, food and medicines all eligible; dedicated counters in store | Not every branch is registered — look for the "Japan. Tax-free Shop" mark | Registered tax-free shop |
My read: do your volume buying at Donki, use Matsukiyo for the thing you forgot, and treat @cosme TOKYO as an afternoon out rather than a haul stop. Testing a cushion foundation properly is worth paying retail for. Buying your fifth bottle of lotion there is not.
One rule applies everywhere, because it's national law rather than shop policy: ¥5,000 or more before tax, same shop, same day. Donki also wants the original passport — it says copies and photos are not accepted — and the name on your card should match it. Our full guide to tax-free shopping in Japan walks through the paperwork.
🧳 What the November 2026 change does to a big cosmetics haul
This is the part people are getting wrong, so read it twice if your trip starts in November.
Until 31 October 2026, the old system runs: you show your passport, the shop takes the tax off at the counter, your consumables go into a sealed bag you're not meant to open in Japan.
From 1 November 2026, you pay the full tax-included price in the shop. The Japan Tourism Agency's traveller page says you then present your passport at a tax-free procedures terminal at the airport or port within 90 days of purchase, and the refund follows once customs confirms the goods are leaving. The refund comes from the shop or a refund service provider it contracts — which means the method and timing depend on where you bought.
Two practical consequences for a big skincare haul.
First, your card takes the full hit on the day. A ¥30,000 cosmetics basket means ¥30,000 leaving your account in Shibuya, with the tax coming back later. Budget for that.
Second — and this is the trap — the special sealed packaging goes away, but the obligation doesn't. The Tourism Agency is explicit that consumables used up inside Japan don't get refunded. That shopper's haul post I quoted earlier included the tip that you can unseal your Donki bag because "they really don't check at the airport." Under the new system, customs confirmation is the thing that triggers your money coming back. Don't plan around nobody looking.
Build in airport time. A cosmetics haul plus a refund terminal queue is not a 40-minutes-before-boarding activity.
❓ Quick questions
Is Don Quijote really cheaper than a normal drugstore?
Often, on exactly these kinds of items. But it varies store to store by the company's own admission, so if a Matsukiyo is next door, a 30-second price check is worth it.
Can I buy sheet masks and use them during my trip?
You can buy them normally and use them freely. If you want the consumption tax back, leave them unopened until you've cleared customs.
Do I need the majica app?
No. The monthly majica member prices are aimed at residents, and they don't publish the amounts online anyway. Tax-free is the bigger lever for you.
What about sunscreen in hand luggage?
A 70 g tube is fine. If you're buying four of them plus 170 mL lotion bottles, that's checked-bag territory.
Which single item if I only buy one?
Hada Labo Gokujyun lotion. ¥902 in Tokyo, US$25.99 at Target.
