You're standing in a Kyoto souvenir shop holding a matcha Kit Kat, doing maths in your head: how many of these do I need, and will they melt?
Short answer — buy the 3-bars-×-10-boxes format, buy it at the airport on your way out, and don't worry about the date on the packet. It keeps for months.
The longer answer is that "regional Kit Kat" in Japan means two different things, and knowing which one you're chasing saves you a lot of walking. Some flavours belong to a place. Many more belong to a channel — airport duty-free, specifically — and you cannot buy those in a shop downtown at any price.
🍬 Regional flavour or airport-only flavour?
Two categories, and travellers mix them up constantly.
Place-tied flavours are sold where the ingredient comes from. The Uji matcha version is made with tea from Itohkyuemon in Uji, Kyoto, and that company sells a 10-bar box on its own site for ¥1,080 including tax as of 2026-09. Pine Ame flavour — built around an Osaka pineapple candy that's been around for about 70 years — launched in April 2025 for souvenir shops in the Kansai area only, at ¥1,166 including tax for 10 bars.
Airport-exclusive flavours are the ones that look mysterious online. ANA's duty-free shop labels Tokyo Island Lemon, white peach, amaou strawberry and wa-ichigo (Japanese strawberry) as available only at airport terminals. Tokyo Island Lemon uses lemon from the Ogasawara Islands, which are technically part of Tokyo and about 1,000 km south of Shibuya.
Here's the part people miss: the flavour you photographed on someone's feed was probably duty-free, not regional. Save the hunt for departure day.
🗾 Which flavour, which channel, what it costs
Prices below are duty-free or tax-free unless noted, all as of 2026-09.
| Flavour | Tied to | Where it's sold | Pack | Price | Per bar |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Uji matcha (Itohkyuemon) | Kyoto / Uji | ANA duty-free (Narita, Haneda), KIX duty-free | 3 × 10 boxes | ¥2,280 | ~¥76 |
| Uji matcha | Kyoto / Uji | Itohkyuemon's own shops and site | 10 bars | ¥1,080 (tax incl.) | ~¥108 |
| Wa-ichigo (Japanese strawberry) | Airport channel | ANA duty-free, Narita T1 + Haneda T2/T3 | 3 × 10 boxes | ¥1,900 | ~¥63 |
| White peach | Airport channel | ANA duty-free, Narita + Haneda | 3 × 10 boxes | ¥2,280 | ~¥76 |
| Tokyo Island Lemon | Ogasawara Islands, Tokyo | ANA duty-free, Narita + Haneda | 10 bars | ¥900 | ~¥90 |
| Amaou strawberry | Airport channel | ANA duty-free, Narita + Haneda | 10 bars | ¥740 | ~¥74 |
| Variety assortment (sakura / Uji matcha / blueberry cheesecake) | Kansai Airport only | KIX duty-free | 9 bars | ¥1,500 | ~¥167 |
| Pine Ame | Osaka / Kansai | Souvenir shops in the Kansai area | 10 bars | ¥1,166 (tax incl.) | ~¥117 |
Two things jump out of that last column.
The 3 × 10 box formats are the cheapest per bar and the most useful, because they arrive pre-split into ten small boxes you can hand out one at a time. Wa-ichigo at roughly ¥63 a bar is the value pick on this list.
The pretty variety assortment costs about 2.6 times as much per bar as wa-ichigo. It's a lovely object and a terrible way to feed an office. Buy it for one person who'll appreciate the box, then buy a 3 × 10 for everyone else.
✈️ Airport and station shops that actually stock multipacks
Airport first, because it's reliable and it's on your route anyway.
At Narita, two shops list Kit Kat in their own product lineups on the airport's site: GATE WAY in Terminal 1 North Wing, 3rd floor, after security (08:00–20:45), and ANA DUTY FREE SHOP in Terminal 1 South Wing, 3rd floor, after security (07:30–21:00). Both sit past passport control, so you need to clear security before you can shop.
At Haneda, Tokyo Souvenir Shop North is in Terminal 3 on the 3rd floor, after security, open 06:00–24:00. That 24-hour-ish window matters if your flight leaves at dawn.
At Kansai, the airport's own duty-free shop sells the Uji matcha 3 × 10 and the nine-bar assortment, and both are marked airport-exclusive. On that official KIX page the Uji matcha pack carries a 4.9-out-of-5 rating from buyers as of 2026-09 — for a shop that sells hundreds of snacks, that's a genuinely strong number.
For station and shop hunting in town, Nestlé Japan runs its own store locator: you search a product's barcode and it lists shops stocking it, prefecture by prefecture, with a map view. It's in Japanese, but the prefecture menu is easy to click through, and for a specific flavour it beats wandering. Station souvenir halls and department store basements carry regional boxes, though the lineup rotates and nobody promises a given flavour on a given day.
If you just want a lot of ordinary Kit Kat cheaply, that's a convenience store job, not a souvenir shop job — see our konbini snack guide for that side of it.
💸 Souvenir box or single bar?
Single bars from a shop shelf are for eating now. Boxes are for carrying home. Don't blur the two.
A 3 × 10 box gives you 30 bars in ten giftable units for ¥1,900–¥2,280 as of 2026-09. That's roughly ¥190–¥228 per gift — about the price of a coffee, for something with a place name on it.
Buying ten separate 10-bar boxes to get ten flavours costs several times more and fills half a suitcase. My honest read after comparing the lineup: pick two formats. One 3 × 10 for colleagues, one distinctive regional box (Pine Ame if you're in Kansai, Uji matcha if you're in Kyoto) for the person who actually cares.
🧳 Will it survive the flight home?
Yes, comfortably, and this is the anxiety I'd most like to remove.
Kansai Airport's duty-free shop states a best-before date of more than 120 days after pickup — four months, minimum. Itohkyuemon lists its Uji matcha Kit Kat as 12 months from manufacture.
Heat is the real enemy, not time. Itohkyuemon's own storage line is to keep it below 28 °C and away from humidity. So: don't leave the box in a sunlit hotel window in August, don't pack it against a laptop charger, and put it in your cabin bag rather than a hold bag that may sit on hot tarmac.
Chocolate is not restricted by most countries, but rules vary by destination — our customs and food souvenirs guide covers what to declare.
🛍 The fancy ones: Kit Kat Chocolatory
Separate world. Chocolatory shops are Nestlé Japan's premium gift stores — one example, the Aeon Mall Urawa Misono branch in Saitama, opened in September 2023 and offers "Pick To Mix", where you assemble your own selection of individual pieces, and "My KITKAT", a personalised box with messages and wrapping.
Worth a detour if you're building one special gift. Not the place to buy in bulk. And because the shop list changes, check the official site before you plan a trip around one.
❓ Quick questions
Are regional Kit Kats cheaper at convenience stores?
Convenience stores sell the standard nationwide range, not regional boxes. For place-tied flavours you need souvenir shops, station gift halls, or airport duty-free.
Can I buy airport-exclusive flavours before the airport?
No. ANA and Kansai Airport both label these as sold only at airport terminals, so plan for departure day.
How many should I buy for an office?
One 3 × 10 box covers ten people with three bars each. Two boxes cover most workplaces.
Do seasonal flavours come back every year?
Some recur. Heartful Bear, the bear-shaped Valentine's range, returned for a season starting 13 January 2026 through Nestlé's online shop and retailers including Loft. Seasonal means seasonal, though — if you see it, buy it.
Will they melt?
Not if you keep them under 28 °C and in your cabin bag. Shelf life is months, not days.
Before you fly
- Place-tied flavours (Uji matcha, Pine Ame) are bought in the region; fruit flavours like wa-ichigo and white peach are airport-only
- 3 × 10 boxes are the cheapest per bar and the easiest to share
- Narita T1 (GATE WAY, ANA DUTY FREE) and Haneda T3 are all after security — allow time
- Shelf life is at least four months; heat, not time, is the risk
- Variety assortments cost about 2.6× per bar. One is plenty
Next action: pick the flavour you actually want, then check Nestlé Japan's store locator for a shop near your route — or just add twenty minutes to your airport arrival and buy it after security.
