Two of the things on your Tokyo list have a hard deadline. The rest don't.

Ghibli Park and the Ghibli Museum release tickets on one date, at one time, and if you miss it you wait a month. Shibuya Sky and the teamLab museums sell on a rolling window that opens much closer to your trip — you can't book them early even if you want to.

So the only date you need in your calendar right now is the 10th.

🎟 What do you actually need to book weeks ahead in Tokyo?

Here's the whole planning problem on one screen. "Walk-up odds" means: can you just turn up on the day?

Attraction When tickets are released Can you walk up?
Ghibli Park (Aichi, near Nagoya) 14:00 Japan time on the 10th, two months ahead No. The park sells no tickets on site at all
Ghibli Museum (Mitaka, Tokyo) 10:00 Japan time on the 10th, for the following month No. Advance reservation only, nothing sold at the door
Shibuya Sky (Shibuya) Rolling window that opens weeks, not months, ahead Counter exists, but if adult tickets are sold out online they're gone at the counter too
teamLab Borderless (Azabudai Hills) Rolling, by dated entry slot Yes if it isn't sold out — costs ¥200 more on site
teamLab Planets (Toyosu) Rolling, by dated entry slot Timed entry, so the slot you want is the thing that disappears

One correction before you plan anything: Ghibli Park is not in Tokyo. It's in Aichi Prefecture, out near Nagoya — a bullet train day trip. The Ghibli Museum in Mitaka is the Tokyo one. People mix these two up constantly and then discover their "Ghibli day" needs a 350 km round trip attached to it.

🗓 When do Ghibli Park and Ghibli Museum tickets go on sale?

Both use the 10th of the month. Different times, different lead times.

Ghibli Park goes on sale two months ahead, at 14:00 Japan time on the 10th. The official English page gives the pattern directly: November 2026 dates went on sale on 10 September 2026.

Ghibli Museum goes on sale the month before, at 10:00 Japan time on the 10th. November dates go on sale on 10 October.

So if you land on 12 November, your two alarms are 10 September at 14:00 JST and 10 October at 10:00 JST. That's it. Everything else waits.

A few rules from the Ghibli Park page worth knowing before the clock starts, because you won't have time to read them at 14:00: maximum six tickets per transaction, one purchase per ticket type per month, and no refunds and no date changes once you've booked. Overseas buyers are pointed at two channels only — LAWSON TICKET's English site and Klook.

Set up your LAWSON TICKET account days beforehand, not on the day. Registering while a queue is moving is how people lose their place.

Honestly, the Premium pass is the bottleneck, not the park. As of 2026-09 the O-Sanpo Day Pass Premium (all five areas) is ¥7,300 for a weekday adult and ¥7,800 at weekends, while the Standard pass (three areas) is ¥3,300 weekday and ¥3,800 weekend. If the Premium is gone, the Standard often isn't — and a Standard day at Ghibli Park still beats no day at Ghibli Park.

The Ghibli Museum, by contrast, is one of the cheapest good things in Tokyo: ¥1,000 for adults 19 and over, ¥700 for 13–18, ¥400 for 7–12, ¥100 for 4–6, free under 4, as of 2026-09. Japan's national tourism body flags it in its own advance-booking guide as the classic example of a ticket that fills instantly.

🏙 How far ahead should you book Shibuya Sky?

You can't book it today, and that's fine. Shibuya Sky's sale window opens close to your visit date rather than months out, and the exact window has been changed before — check the official ticket page for the current one, then set a reminder for the day it opens.

What matters more is this, straight from Tokyo's official tourism guide: if adult tickets are sold out online, they are also unavailable at the counter. That's the part people miss. The 14th-floor ticket desk isn't a secret reserve — it's the same stock. Turning up hopefully at 17:00 on a clear Saturday is not a plan.

Prices as of 2026-09: booking online costs ¥2,700 for an adult entering before 15:00 and ¥3,400 from 15:00. At the counter it's ¥3,000 and ¥3,700. Children under 5 go free, and children's tickets are sold at the counter only. Open 10:00–22:30, last admission 21:20.

Check the sunset time for your date before you pick a slot — JNTO recommends exactly this, and it's the difference between a nice view and the view everyone's phone is full of. The slot starting roughly an hour before sunset gives you daylight, sunset and night lights on one ticket.

If sunset is sold out, take a late slot instead of a middle-of-the-afternoon one. Tokyo at 21:00 from an open rooftop is its own thing, and those slots survive longer.

🎨 Do you need to book teamLab in advance?

Yes, but not weeks in advance — and the reason is time slots, not sell-outs.

Both teamLab venues run on dated, timed entry. What vanishes first is the good slot on a Saturday, not the day itself.

teamLab Borderless at Azabudai Hills is ¥3,800 and up for adults (18+), ¥2,800 for teens, ¥1,500 for ages 4–12, free under 4, as of 2026-09. Prices move day to day, and buying on site adds ¥200. Open 9:00–21:00, last admission 20:00. Nearest station is Kamiyacho.

teamLab Planets in Toyosu is ¥3,200 general admission as of 2026-09, one minute from Shin-Toyosu station on the Yurikamome line, with last entry 60 minutes before closing. Hours shift by season and there are irregular closing days, so check the date you want.

A ¥200 door surcharge is not a penalty worth panicking about. Which tells you something useful: for teamLab, the cost of leaving it late is small. Book it a couple of weeks out, after the Ghibli dates are settled, and spend your attention where the deadline is real.

One practical note for Planets: you walk through water. Wear or bring something you can roll above the knee, and skip the day you've planned around new white trainers.

✅ Book in this order

Work backwards from your departure date.

When Do this
10+ weeks out Pick your Ghibli Park date. Create a LAWSON TICKET account and add a card
~8 weeks out The 10th, 14:00 JST — buy Ghibli Park. Be logged in 15 minutes early
~4–5 weeks out The 10th, 10:00 JST — buy Ghibli Museum for your travel month
2–3 weeks out Check Shibuya Sky's window and book the moment it opens. Check sunset time first
1–2 weeks out Book teamLab Borderless or Planets slots. Weekday mornings are the calm ones
Anytime after Everything else in Tokyo. Genuinely

Don't stack them. Ghibli Park is a full day in Aichi; the Museum is a half-day in Mitaka. Putting both in one 48-hour window is how a holiday turns into a logistics exercise.

❓ Questions people ask before they book

Can I buy Ghibli Park tickets when I get to Japan?
Not at the park. The official page states tickets cannot be purchased at any area of Ghibli Park. You buy online, in advance, through the approved channels — and you may be asked to show ID at entry.

What if I miss the 10th?
For Ghibli Park, wait for the next 10th and look at the remaining dates in that month's release, or shift your target date into the following month. For the Ghibli Museum, the next release is the following month's 10th. Neither has a same-day option.

Is Shibuya Sky worth booking, or can I use a free observation deck?
If you want the open rooftop specifically, book it — nothing free replicates a 230-metre open-air deck over Shibuya. If you mainly want a high view of Tokyo, the free deck at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building exists and needs no ticket at all.

Borderless or Planets, if I only have time for one?
Planets is smaller, cheaper at ¥3,200 as of 2026-09, and you're barefoot in water for a lot of it. Borderless is bigger, starts at ¥3,800, and is a wander-and-get-lost building. Short trip with kids: Planets. Art-first and you want the full scale: Borderless.

Do I need to print anything?
No. These are phone tickets. What you do need is a phone that's charged at 13:59 on the 10th.

The short version

  • The 10th of the month is the only real deadline: Ghibli Park at 14:00 JST two months ahead, Ghibli Museum at 10:00 JST one month ahead
  • Neither Ghibli site sells tickets at the door — advance booking is the only way in
  • Shibuya Sky's counter is not a backup: if adults' tickets are sold out online, the counter has none either
  • teamLab is a two-week job, not a two-month one, and buying on site costs only ¥200 extra
  • Ghibli Park is near Nagoya, not in Tokyo — budget a whole day for it

Next thing to do: open your calendar, find the 10th that falls two months before your trip, and put a 13:55 Japan-time alarm on it. Then go back to the fun part of planning.
