Most hotel WiFi in Japan is free, easy to join, and fine for maps, messaging and browsing. Where it gets unreliable is the evening, and where it gets genuinely uncertain is traditional accommodation — the national tourism body itself tells you not to expect WiFi at a traditional ryokan or a small minshuku. So if you have a video call, an online check-in or a work deadline tied to a specific hour, treat in-room WiFi as your first option rather than your only one.

Is hotel WiFi in Japan good enough for video calls?
Usually yes for a one-to-one call, and less predictably for a group meeting where you also share your screen. The published requirements are lower than most people assume.
Microsoft states that Teams “can deliver HD video quality in under 1.5 Mbps”, and that when bandwidth is insufficient, “Teams prioritizes audio quality over video quality”. That last point matters more than the numbers: a struggling connection usually degrades into a call where you can still be heard but not clearly seen.
Here is what the three major platforms publish for their own services. These are per-device figures, so two people calling from the same room roughly double the load on the room’s connection.

The practical read: a call needs single-digit Mbps, not tens of Mbps. If a room connection can hold about 4 Mbps in both directions with low jitter, a normal work call will work. The problem in hotels is rarely headline speed — it is whether that modest amount stays available for forty minutes without interruption.
Why does hotel WiFi in Japan slow down at night?
Two separate things stack in the evening, and it helps to keep them apart.
The first is nationwide demand. Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications publishes monthly traffic aggregates from cooperating ISPs. In its report on November 2025 data, released 25 February 2026, the ministry states that across a week, the peak for both download and upload traffic from fixed broadband subscribers falls in the 19:00–21:00 time band. It also reports that peak download traffic grew year on year — up 14.6% on weekdays and 11.5% on holidays.
That is a national figure for residential fixed broadband, not a measurement of any hotel. But your hotel sits on the same consumer-grade infrastructure, and the evening peak is when the whole country is competing for it.
The second is the building itself. A hotel typically buys one internet line and shares it across every room. In the daytime most guests are out; between roughly 19:00 and 23:00 they are back in their rooms, streaming and video calling at the same time. The line does not get slower — it gets divided more ways.
Wireless conditions compound it. Microsoft’s own network guidance for Teams notes that the 2.4 GHz band is “often affected by other consumer devices that operate in that range”, while 5 GHz “is better suited to real-time media” but “requires more access points to get sufficient coverage”. It also warns that access points too close together on the same channel “can cause signal overlap and unintentionally compete, resulting in a bad experience for the user”. In a dense corridor of rooms with a router in each one, that is exactly the condition you are sitting in.
What WiFi should you expect by accommodation type?
Rather than quote speeds nobody has measured for your specific property, it is more useful to know what kind of setup each accommodation type tends to have and what to check on arrival.

Two documented data points anchor the ends of that table. Toyoko Inn, one of Japan’s largest business hotel chains, states on its official rooms page that “Free internet available via Wi-Fi and Ethernet” and that “Free Wi-Fi is available at lobby and all guest rooms for mobile access” — a wired port in the room is a genuinely useful thing to have on a call night. At the other end, the Japan National Tourism Organization’s own connectivity guidance says plainly: “don’t expect traditional ryokan hotels and smaller minshuku style accommodation to provide such a service.”
JNTO also notes that free WiFi is widely available in hotels, cafes, shopping centres, airports and major stations, but that “the signal on some of these free services can be patchy and slow”, and that availability thins out in remote areas.
How do you test hotel WiFi in 60 seconds on arrival?
Do this when you walk in, not fifteen minutes before your call. If the room is unusable you still have time to change something.
- Join the network from where you will actually sit. Signal at the door and signal at the desk by the window are not the same. Test at the desk.
- Run a speed test, then run it again. One reading tells you almost nothing. Two readings a minute apart tell you whether the connection is steady or swinging.
- Look at the upload number, not just download. Your camera feed is upload. This is the figure that fails first and the one hotel marketing never mentions.
- Make a 30-second test call. Call anyone, or start an empty meeting in your own platform and watch its connection indicator. Speed tests measure throughput; calls are sensitive to jitter and packet loss, which a speed test may not reveal.
- Check whether a 5 GHz network is offered. If you see two networks with similar names, the 5 GHz one is generally the better choice for a call, per Microsoft’s guidance above, as long as your signal is strong where you are sitting.
If the room has an Ethernet port and you have an adapter, use the cable for the call. It removes the wireless variables entirely and leaves only the shared building line.
What to do when the hotel WiFi cannot hold your call
Work down this ladder in order. Each step costs a little more effort than the last.
- Turn your own video off. Zoom’s audio-only VoIP figure is 60–80 kbps against 1.2 Mbps for 720p video. Dropping your camera frees roughly an order of magnitude of bandwidth.
- Move to the wired port if the room has one.
- Try the lobby or a co-working corner. Different access point, different load — though also less privacy.
- Tether to your phone’s mobile data. Apple describes Personal Hotspot as using “the cellular data connection of an iPhone or iPad (Wi-Fi + Cellular) to create a temporary, portable Wi-Fi network that other devices can use to connect to the internet”, and lists three ways to connect: WiFi, USB cable, or Bluetooth. USB is the steadiest of the three because it takes the wireless hop out of the chain.
- Reschedule or dial in by audio. Not a technical fix, but on a trip it is often the right one.
Step 4 is why a travel eSIM is worth having even if you never intended to rely on mobile data. It gives you a second, independent path to the internet that does not care how many other guests are streaming. Check before you travel that your plan permits tethering and that your phone can share the travel line, since not every provider or plan allows hotspot use.
How can you check WiFi speed before you book?
For hotels, the honest answer is that you mostly cannot — chains publish that WiFi exists, not how fast it is. For private rentals you sometimes can.
Airbnb lets hosts run an in-app speed test and display the result on the listing. Airbnb’s help page sets out these bands:

Read that number with care. Airbnb states that “the speed is collected at one point in time, and while Hosts may choose to run these speed tests regularly, this isn’t required”, and notes that real performance can vary with network conditions, where you are in the property, and other people using the connection at the same time. A listing showing 60 Mbps was 60 Mbps once, somewhere in the building.
For hotels, the most reliable pre-booking signals are indirect: whether the property advertises wired LAN in the room, whether it markets itself to business travellers, and whether it offers a paid premium WiFi tier at all.

Is hotel WiFi in Japan free?
At most hotels, yes. Free in-room and lobby WiFi is standard at the large business chains — Toyoko Inn, for example, states on its official site that free internet is available via WiFi and Ethernet in rooms. Some higher-end properties offer a free basic tier plus a paid faster tier.
Do ryokan have WiFi?
Many modern and larger ryokan do, but JNTO explicitly advises travellers not to expect it at traditional ryokan and smaller minshuku. Where it exists in an older building, coverage may reach the lobby and common areas better than individual rooms. Ask specifically about your room when you book.
How many Mbps do I need for a video call in my hotel room?
Based on the vendors’ own published figures, roughly 1.2–2.6 Mbps for a 720p call and around 3.6–4.0 Mbps for 1080p or a group meeting with screen sharing. Upload matters as much as download, and a steady 4 Mbps is more useful than an unsteady 40 Mbps.

Because the hotel’s single shared line is divided among however many guests are online, and the evening is when guests are in their rooms. Japan’s Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications reports that national fixed broadband traffic peaks in the 19:00–21:00 band, so the wider network is at its busiest at the same time.
Should I use an eSIM instead of hotel WiFi?
Use both. Hotel WiFi is free and usually sufficient for ordinary browsing; mobile data gives you an independent connection that is unaffected by how busy the building is. For anything scheduled and important — a call, a check-in, a boarding pass — having a second path available is the point.
